Ada has a rich history that dates back to the late 19th century when it was established as a trading post and later incorporated in 1901. Named after the daughter of early local storekeeper Jeff Reed, the city grew rapidly with the expansion of the railroad and the discovery of oil in the region. Today, Ada is a thriving regional hub with a population of around 17,000 residents. The culture is deeply intertwined with the Chickasaw Nation, whose presence has brought significant economic and cultural development to the area, including world-class healthcare facilities and community centers. The city revolves around a few main districts. The Downtown Historic District features beautiful early-20th-century architecture, local boutiques, and cozy cafes. The Ada Arts District is a burgeoning area filled with galleries, public murals, and the Ada Arts & Heritage Center, celebrating both contemporary and traditional Native American art. East Central University anchors the educational and cultural landscape, bringing youthful energy and collegiate sports to the forefront. Ada is famous for being the home of the Chickasaw Nation Headquarters, the historic McSwain Theatre, and its proximity to the Chickasaw National Recreation Area. It is also known as the birthplace of the Ada Lois Sipuel Fisher, a pivotal figure in the Civil Rights movement. This blend of Native American heritage, academic influence, and frontier resilience gives Ada a distinctly unique cultural identity.
