Hotels in Alice (TX)

Alice, Texas, carries a rich history that mirrors the dramatic development of the American Southwest. Originally established as a ranching outpost in the late 19th century, the city experienced a transformative boom with the discovery of oil in the 1940s, which rapidly expanded its population and infrastructure. Today, Alice seamlessly blends its Western ranching legacy with the culture of the South Texas coastal plains. The city is perhaps most famous for its political history, having been the site of the infamous 1948 Box 13 scandal involving Lyndon B. Johnson, a piece of history vividly chronicled at the local South Texas Museum. Culturally, Alice is deeply influenced by its proximity to Mexico, resulting in a bilingual community where Tejano music, cuisine, and traditions are woven into the everyday fabric of life. The city is divided into a few key areas, with historic Alice Downtown serving as the commercial and cultural heart, featuring heritage buildings and local businesses. The areas surrounding Lake Findley and the Alice Country Club offer greener, more recreational spaces, while the outskirts transition into the expansive ranchlands that define the region. Alice functions primarily as an agricultural and energy hub, with cotton, sorghum, and oil production driving the local economy. For visitors, this means an authentic experience where working cattle ranches and oil derricks sit alongside community parks and museums, providing a multifaceted portrait of rural South Texas life.
