Hotels in Burlington (CO)

Burlington's history is deeply intertwined with the westward expansion of the United States. Founded in the late 19th century as a railroad and agricultural hub, the town was named after Burlington, Iowa, by early settlers who arrived with the railroad lines that stitched across the vast prairie. Today, agriculture remains the lifeblood of the local economy, with wheat, corn, and cattle ranching dominating the surrounding landscape. The culture here is quintessentially rural American, characterized by a strong sense of community, annual county fairs, and a slower pace of life that prioritizes neighborly connection. The town is compact, revolving around a traditional main street and the county courthouse, with most commercial activity oriented toward the I-70 corridor to accommodate interstate travelers. Burlington is famous for its remarkably preserved Kit Carson County Carousel, a surviving relic of a traveling amusement park that found a permanent home here. Additionally, the Old Town Museum complex offers an immersive look at prairie life in the late 1800s and early 1900s, featuring a collection of historic buildings including a schoolhouse, church, and general store. The nearby Bonny Lake area, though affected by water reallocations, still provides a scenic escape for outdoor enthusiasts. What truly sets Burlington apart is its unpretentious charm and the pride residents take in their heritage, making it a compelling stop for history buffs and road-trippers exploring the Great Plains corridor of eastern Colorado.
