Hotels in Calliano (Asti)

Calliano is a picturesque commune steeped in the complex history of the Piedmont region, deeply influenced by the powerful dynasties that once ruled the Monferrato area. The town's cultural identity is inextricably linked to its winemaking heritage, which has shaped both its landscape and its traditions for centuries. At the heart of Calliano lies its historic center, a quiet labyrinth of cobblestone streets, rustic stone houses, and hidden courtyards that echo the footsteps of generations past. The magnificent Castello di Calliano serves as the focal point of the village, a testament to the strategic importance this hilltop settlement held during the medieval conflicts between the Marquis of Monferrato and the House of Savoy. Beyond the castle walls, the commune is surrounded by the undulating hills of the Asti wine region, celebrated globally for its production of Barbera, Grignolino, and Moscato d'Asti. The local culture revolves around the rhythms of the agricultural calendar, with harvest season bringing a vibrant energy to the otherwise tranquil village. Calliano is part of a broader district that includes access to renowned cultural sites like the Asti Cathedral, the bustling Piazza Alfieri, and the grand Palazzo Mazzetti. The area is defined by its dual character: the quiet, agrarian life of the surrounding vineyards and the rich, historical grandeur of nearby Asti. This duality offers visitors a comprehensive taste of Piedmont, from rustic farmhouses and family-run osterie to elegant piazzas and monumental architecture. Calliano represents the soul of Monferrato, where history, culture, and the art of winemaking converge beautifully.
