Hotels in Center (TX)

Center was established in the mid-19th century and has long served as the civic and economic hub of Shelby County. The town's history is deeply rooted in the timber and agriculture industries, which thrived alongside the expansion of the railroads. The discovery of oil in the broader East Texas region also left an indelible mark, bringing economic booms and shaping the local culture. Today, Center is renowned for its striking Shelby County Courthouse, a unique Classical Revival structure built in 1885 that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and remains the centerpiece of the community. The town's culture is distinctly Southern, characterized by a slower pace of life, community gatherings, and a deep appreciation for local heritage. Main districts include the historic downtown square, which features local shops and government offices, and the surrounding residential areas dotted with historic homes. On the outskirts, the landscape opens up to the vast Piney Woods and nearby waterways. Center is famous as a premier launching point for freshwater fishing, particularly at the legendary Toledo Bend Reservoir and Sam Rayburn Reservoir, both consistently ranked among the top bass fishing lakes in the United States. This dual identity of rich historical charm and world-class outdoor recreation defines the essence of Center.
