Hotels in Fontana (CA)

Fontana's rich history is deeply intertwined with the development of Southern California. Founded in 1913 by Azariel B. Cherry, the city remained a quiet rural community for decades, primarily known for its citrus groves and poultry farms. The transformation began during World War II when Henry J. Kaiser built a massive steel mill, transforming Fontana into a booming industrial hub and earning it the moniker of a dynamic working-class city. Today, the steel mill is gone, replaced by the sprawling Auto Club Speedway, symbolizing the city's evolution from heavy industry to entertainment and lifestyle. Culturally, Fontana is a vibrant mosaic reflecting the diverse demographics of the Inland Empire. The city celebrates its heritage through community events, public art installations, and a thriving local food scene. The downtown area, often referred to as the central district, is undergoing revitalization, blending historic charm with modern amenities. South Fontana is largely residential with expansive shopping centers, while North Fontana offers easier access to outdoor recreation and the foothills. Fontana is famous for being a major logistical and transportation hub due to its proximity to major freeways and railways, but it is equally renowned for its community-focused lifestyle. The city boasts an impressive network of parks, including the popular Terry Martin Memorial Dog Park and Miller Park, providing ample green space for residents and visitors alike. Its commitment to growth while preserving community values makes Fontana a fascinating study in Southern California's ever-changing landscape.

Best Time to Visit Fontana (CA)

The optimal time to visit Fontana is during the spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) when the weather is most temperate and pleasant. Spring brings blooming wildflowers to the surrounding hills and comfortable temperatures ranging from the mid-60s to high 70s Fahrenheit, perfect for hiking at the Jurupa Mountains Discovery Center or picnicking at Fontana Park. Fall offers similarly delightful weather with crisp mornings and warm afternoons, ideal for outdoor concerts and community festivals. Summer (June to August) is peak season for racing fans due to NASCAR events at the Auto Club Speedway, but visitors must be prepared for intense heat, with temperatures frequently soaring above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. If visiting in summer, plan indoor activities during midday and stay hydrated. Winter (December to February) is mild compared to much of the country, with temperatures rarely dropping below the 40s. This off-peak season offers a quiet escape and lower accommodation rates. Major events include the Fontana Days Festival in the fall and various car shows throughout the summer, drawing crowds and injecting high energy into the city.
