Mons boasts a rich and tumultuous history that stretches back to Roman times, evolving into a significant medieval fortified city under the Counts of Hainaut. Its strategic location made it a focal point during some of Europe's most defining conflicts, including the Battle of Mons in 1914, the first major clash between British and German forces in World War I. Today, the city is a fascinating tapestry of architectural styles, from the robust Gothic elegance of the Saint Waltrude Collegiate Church to the striking modernity of the new Mons Congress Center.
