Hotels in White River Junction (VT)

White River Junction's story is deeply intertwined with the rails. Established in the mid-19th century, it served as a major railway crossroads, connecting Boston and Montreal, and New York and the Great Lakes. This industrial heritage left a legacy of grand Victorian depots and brick commercial blocks. However, as the railroads declined in the mid-20th century, so did the town's fortune. By the late 20th century, downtown was largely vacant. The renaissance began in the early 2000s when artists and visionaries saw potential in the affordable, character-rich spaces. Today, Historic Downtown White River Junction is the cultural core, home to the Center for Cartoon Art, the Briggs Opera House, and numerous studios. Across the river, the area connects to the vibrant communities of Hanover and Lebanon in New Hampshire. The town is famous for its creative class, the preservation of its railroad heritage, and its proximity to both Dartmouth College and the stunning natural landscapes of the Upper Valley. It is a place where you can explore a cutting-edge art gallery housed in a former feed store, reflecting a culture that honors its past while embracing bohemian innovation. The community is tight-knit, progressive, and fiercely supportive of local enterprise, making it a standout destination in the Green Mountain State.
