Hotels in Winona (MN)

Winona's story is deeply intertwined with the Mississippi River, which served as a vital thoroughfare for Native American communities and later for European settlers and lumber barons in the mid-19th century. Originally a booming lumber and wheat shipping hub, the city has transformed into a regional center for education, arts, and culture while proudly preserving its historical legacy. The Winona County Historical Society meticulously chronicles this vibrant past, offering visitors a deep dive into the region's pioneering days. The city is neatly divided into distinct areas, with the historic downtown district running parallel to the river, featuring stunning Victorian architecture and the iconic Winona County Courthouse. Just inland, the university district brings a lively, eclectic vibe with college-friendly eateries and shops. Above the valley floor, the bluff lands provide a natural playground for outdoor enthusiasts. Winona is most famous for its spectacular topography, being situated in the Driftless Area, a region that escaped the flattening effects of the last glacial period, leaving behind dramatic limestone bluffs and deep river valleys. This unique geography makes it a premier destination for scenic drives, hiking, and river activities. Culturally, Winona punches well above its weight, hosting the renowned Great River Shakespeare Festival and the eclectic Frozen River Film Festival, drawing artists and visitors from across the Midwest to this charming river town.

Best Time to Visit Winona (MN)

Winona experiences the full force of four distinct seasons, each offering a different perspective on the river city. Fall, from September to October, is widely considered the best time to visit. The Driftless Region erupts in brilliant reds, oranges, and golds, making Garvin Heights Park and the surrounding bluffs a spectacular destination for leaf-peeping. Spring brings moderate temperatures and blooming river valleys, ideal for hiking and enjoying the Mississippi as the ice thaws. Summer is peak season, with warm weather perfect for boating, fishing, and exploring the Minnesota Marine Art Museum. This season also features the Great River Shakespeare Festival in June and July, and the Steamboat Days celebration in June, which brings live music and a carnival to Levee Park. Winter is cold and snowy, transforming the bluffs into a quiet, frosty wonderland. While outdoor activities shift to ice fishing and cross-country skiing, the Frozen River Film Festival in February provides a compelling reason to brave the chill. For the best balance of pleasant weather and vibrant activity, late spring through early fall is ideal.
