Hotels in Arundel

Arundel is a town steeped in over a thousand years of history, its identity inextricably linked to the Dukes of Norfolk and their ancestral seat, Arundel Castle. The town grew organically around this mighty fortress, serving as a strategic defensive site and a thriving market hub for the surrounding Sussex agricultural communities. Today, Arundel is celebrated not just for its medieval heritage but for its flourishing arts and antiques culture. The town center is a designated conservation area, characterized by Georgian and Victorian facades that hide even older timber-framed structures beneath. The town can be divided into a few distinct areas. The High Street and Tarrant Street form the commercial heart, brimming with antique shops, tearooms, and art galleries. The River Arun corridor provides a natural playground for waterside strolls and wildlife spotting. To the north, the Arundel Park estate offers sweeping downland landscapes, while the southern fringe opens up to the protected habitats of the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust. Culturally, Arundel punches well above its weight. It is famous for its annual Arundel Festival, a vibrant celebration of music, theatre, and art that transforms the town every August. The town is also renowned as a premier antiques destination in the South East, drawing collectors from across the country. What Arundel is perhaps most famous for, however, is its breathtaking silhouette. The juxtaposition of the ancient castle against the modern Gothic grandeur of Arundel Cathedral, framed by the lush Arun Valley, creates a panoramic view that has inspired artists like J.M.W. Turner for centuries. It is a town that proudly preserves its past while fostering a creative, welcoming community spirit.

Best Time to Visit Arundel

The best time to visit Arundel is during the late spring and early autumn months, specifically May through June and September, when the weather is pleasantly mild and the tourist crowds are manageable. Spring brings blooming wildflowers along the River Arun and the South Downs, making it ideal for walking and exploring the Wetlands Trust. Summer, from July to August, is the peak season. The weather is at its warmest, perfect for riverside picnics and boat trips, but this is also when the town is busiest, especially during the Arundel Festival in late August, which fills the streets with performers and art exhibitions. Autumn is a magical time to visit as the surrounding woodlands and the castle grounds erupt into rich golds and russets. The temperatures are cooler, but the crisp air is perfect for hiking the South Downs Way. Winter, from December through February, is the off-peak season. While colder and wetter, Arundel takes on a wonderfully festive atmosphere. The castle hosts special Christmas events, and the town's cozy pubs with roaring log fires provide a warm refuge. Overall, for the best balance of good weather and tranquil sightseeing, September is highly recommended.
