Hotels in Benalla

Benalla's story begins with the traditional custodians of the land, the Yorta Yorta and Taungurung people, who have lived in the region for thousands of years. European settlement took hold in the 1830s when explorers followed the Broken River, and the town was officially surveyed in 1848. Named after an Indigenous word possibly meaning 'waterhole' or 'musk duck,' Benalla quickly grew as an agricultural and transportation hub, boosted significantly by the arrival of the railway in 1873. Today, the city is famous for its deep connection to both aviation and the arts. As the home of the Benalla Gliding Club and the Benalla Aviation Museum, it holds a special place in Australia's aviation history. Culturally, Benalla has reinvented itself as a significant regional arts destination. The Benalla Art Gallery, situated on the banks of the lake, is a cultural landmark, while the city's streets serve as an open-air gallery featuring large-scale murals by celebrated street artists. The city is divided into a few key areas: the compact Central Business District where heritage buildings line the main street, the picturesque Lake Benalla precinct, and the sprawling residential suburbs surrounded by rich farmland. This blend of rural authenticity and cultural sophistication makes Benalla a uniquely appealing destination in regional Victoria.

Best Time to Visit Benalla

Benalla experiences a temperate climate with four distinct seasons, making it a year-round destination, though each season offers a different appeal. Spring (September to November) is arguably the most beautiful time to visit. Autumn (March to May) offers crisp mornings and golden foliage, creating stunning conditions for photography and outdoor walks without the summer crowds. The Benalla Festival often lights up the lake in autumn. Winter (June to August) is chilly and often damp, with temperatures frequently dropping to near freezing overnight.
