Hotels in Colombier-Saugnieu

The history of Colombier-Saugnieu is deeply rooted in the agricultural and feudal traditions of the Rhone-Alpes region. Originally composed of two distinct hamlets, Colombier and Saugnieu, the commune was officially merged, creating a unified community that has long thrived on farming and local trade. Culturally, the area is an extension of the Lyonnais heritage, benefitting from the immense historical wealth of nearby Lyon while preserving its own distinct village identity. The commune does not feature sprawling districts; instead, it is anchored by the Colombier-Saugnieu Village center, a picturesque cluster of traditional homes and community spaces, and the modern airport zone that brings international flair and economic vitality. What Colombier-Saugnieu is most famous for is its role as the home of Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport, named after the legendary French aviator and writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. However, reducing the town to merely an airport stopover would be a mistake. It is also celebrated for its proximity to some of the region's finest recreational spaces, such as the Parc des Oiseaux, one of France's largest bird parks, and the historic Château de Septème. The local culture emphasizes community, outdoor living, and an appreciation for the natural beauty of the Rhône valley. Festivals and local markets often reflect traditional rural French customs, providing an authentic slice of provincial life that contrasts wonderfully with the metropolitan energy of Lyon just down the road.
