Hotels in Gravesend

Gravesend boasts a compelling history that stretches back to Roman times, but it was during the medieval and Tudor periods that the town truly flourished as a critical Thames crossing point and haven for sailors. The town's name itself is derived from its position at the end of the grave, or grove, reflecting its ancient Saxon roots. Culturally, Gravesend is a melting pot, heavily influenced by its maritime connections. The historic arrival of the Empire Windrush in 1948 at nearby Tilbury brought a significant Caribbean community, adding vibrant multicultural layers to the town's identity, celebrated today through diverse festivals and cuisine. The town is distinctly divided into several key areas. The Town Centre and Waterfront form the historical and commercial heart, where the Gravesend Town Pier and St George's Church anchor the community. To the west, Cyprus Wharf offers a glimpse into the town's industrial and dockland heritage. East of the center, residential areas blend seamlessly into the picturesque countryside, with Shorne Woods Country Park providing a lush, green escape. Gravesend is famous for its enduring connection to Pocahontas, its historic pier, and its panoramic views of the Thames estuary. The town also serves as a practical hub for the surrounding region, balancing its traditional market town atmosphere with excellent commuter links to London. This duality gives Gravesend a unique character where historical pubs sit alongside contemporary developments, and global influences enrich traditional Kentish culture.
