Summer (June to August) can be extremely hot and dry, with temperatures often soaring above 35°C (95°F), though it is the peak tourist season for the Mogao Caves. Winter (November to March) is bitterly cold, windy, and dry, with temperatures frequently below freezing; many desert sites are less accessible, but hotel prices are at their lowest.
