Hotels in Laax

Laax, situated in the Graubünden canton, is part of the tri-village destination of Flims Laax Falera, one of the most significant tourism hubs in the Swiss Alps. The area's history stretches back to the Rhaeto-Romanic era, and the local language and customs still reflect this ancient heritage, giving the village a distinct cultural identity separate from the German-speaking majority of Switzerland. Historically a quiet farming community, Laax experienced a transformative boom with the advent of winter tourism in the mid-20th century. Today, it is internationally renowned for its progressive freestyle culture, drawing snowboarders and skiers from across the globe. The village is uniquely divided into Laax Dorf (the village) and Laax Murschetg, which connects directly to the cable car station leading up to Crap Sogn Gion. Culturally, Laax is a fascinating blend of old and new. Traditional wooden chalets and ancient churches sit alongside the striking, award-winning architecture of the Rocksresort, with its modern concrete and glass cubes. The region is famous for its incredible geological features, most notably the Flims Rockslide, one of the largest visible landslides in the world, which created the dramatic landscape of the Flims Rocks Resort area and the stunning turquoise Lake Cauma. The local economy is heavily driven by tourism, with a strong emphasis on sustainability and preserving the pristine alpine environment. Visitors will find a community deeply connected to its mountain roots, where seasonal transitions dictate the rhythm of life. Whether it is the pulsating energy of the winter ski season or the restorative ambiance of the summer hiking months, Laax offers an authentic slice of Swiss alpine life.

Spring, from April to June, is the shoulder season; the lower trails begin to thaw, offering peaceful hiking with blooming alpine flowers, while the higher slopes may still catch late-season snow. Summer, from July to September, is the peak season for hiking, mountain biking, and lake swimming. The weather is pleasantly warm with long daylight hours, and Lake Cauma becomes a popular spot for sunbathing and swimming. The annual Flims Laax Falera summer events include outdoor concerts and freestyle sports camps. Autumn, from October to mid-December, is the quietest off-peak period. Some cable cars close for maintenance, but the fall foliage is spectacular, and it is the perfect time for serene, crowd-free walks and wellness retreats.
