Hotels in Malvern

Great Malvern is a historic town deeply rooted in the Victorian spa tradition, though its history stretches back much further to the founding of a 7th-century priory. The town flourished in the 19th century when the purity of its spring water attracted the fashionable elite, leading to the construction of grand hotels, pump rooms, and the impressive Great Malvern Priory, which houses some of the finest medieval stained glass in the country. Culturally, Malvern punches well above its weight. The Malvern Theatres complex, housed in a beautiful Victorian building, hosts a year-round program of drama, comedy, and music, including the renowned Malvern Festival. The town is also intrinsically linked to Sir Edward Elgar, who lived and taught here; his legacy is celebrated throughout the area. The town is broadly divided into Great Malvern, Malvern Link, and Malvern Wells. Great Malvern serves as the cultural and historical heart, characterized by steep, winding streets, Victorian shop fronts, and the priory. Malvern Link offers a more residential feel with traditional high street amenities, while Malvern Wells sits further south, closer to the iconic hills. What Malvern is most famous for, however, is the Malvern Hills. Designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, these ancient hills offer some of the best walking in the Midlands and provide a natural divide between the counties. Additionally, the town's unique artisanal claim to fame is the Morgan Motor Company, where visitors can tour the factory and witness the traditional craftsmanship of these iconic wooden-framed sports cars.

Best Time to Visit Malvern

Malvern experiences a typical English maritime climate, making it a year-round destination, though each season offers a distinctly different experience. Spring (March to May) is delightful, with the hills coming alive with wildflowers and the weather turning mild; this is an excellent time for hiking before the summer crowds arrive. Summer (June to August) is the peak season, offering the warmest and driest weather, perfect for extensive hill walking, picnics, and outdoor theatre performances. However, this is also when accommodation prices are at their highest and the hills can be busy. Autumn (September to November) is arguably the most picturesque time to visit, as the foliage on the hills and in the town turns vibrant shades of gold and russet, and the Elgar Walk is particularly atmospheric. Winter (December to February) is quiet and off-peak, with a charming, frosty atmosphere; while hill walking can be bracing, it is the best time to enjoy the town's indoor cultural offerings, cosy pubs, and the Malvern Theatres. Major events include the Malvern Spring and Autumn Gardening Shows at the Three Counties Showground, which draw huge crowds, and various Elgar festivals and cultural events throughout the summer months.
