Hotels in Wilderswil

Wilderswil boasts a rich history that dates back to the Middle Ages, with its first recorded mention in the year 1224. Over the centuries, it evolved from a humble agricultural community into a significant railway hub following the arrival of the Berner Oberland Bahn in 1890, which transformed it into a vital access point for the Jungfrau Region. Culturally, the village embodies the traditional Bernese Oberland way of life, where local customs, folklore, and a deep connection to the land are proudly preserved. The village center is a designated heritage site, characterized by beautifully preserved wooden chalets, rustic barns, and the striking 12th-century Romanesque church. Wilderswil does not have distinct bustling districts; instead, it is a unified, cohesive community spread across a gentle hillside. The lower village aligns with the railway station and main road, offering convenient transit connections, while the upper reaches provide sprawling meadows and hiking trails leading toward Schynige Platte. The village is famous primarily for being the starting point of the Schynige Platte Railway, a historic cogwheel train that chugs up to a stunning alpine ridge offering some of the most magnificent botanical alpine gardens and panoramic views in Switzerland. It is also renowned for its proximity to the Lauterbrunnen Valley and the Jungfraujoch, making it a pilgrimage site for railway enthusiasts and nature lovers from around the globe.
