Hotels in Wildschoenau

Wildschoenau, translating to "Beautiful Wild Valley," is a serene alpine valley in Tyrol, Austria, comprising four main villages: Niederau, Oberau, Auffach, and Muhlbach. The valley's history is deeply rooted in farming and mining, with the latter leaving a fascinating legacy that can still be explored today. Culturally, Wildschoenau is a stronghold of Tyrolean tradition. The locals take immense pride in their heritage, which is celebrated through folk music, traditional attire like the dirndl and lederhosen, and annual events such as the Wildschönauer Krautfest, honoring the valley's famous cabbage farmers. The valley is partitioned into distinct areas, each with its own character. Niederau is the most popular base for winter sports, bustling with skiers and snowboarders. Oberau serves as the administrative and commercial heart, offering essential services and a charming village center. Auffach, located further up the valley, provides a quieter, more refined atmosphere with direct access to the Markbachjoch Cable Car. The region is famous for its dual-season appeal: the Wildschoenau Ski Area and interconnected Alpbachtal provide exceptional winter terrain, while summer transforms the valley into a hiking paradise, highlighted by the dramatic Kundler Gorge. The St. Lawrence Church stands as a historical and architectural anchor, reflecting the deep Catholic faith of the region. This blend of deep-rooted history, vibrant living culture, and breathtaking natural districts makes Wildschoenau a quintessential Tyrolean gem.
